Keyboards and iPads

Pupils in year 5 and 6 have been developing their keyboard performance skills this half term. Year 6 have been exploring the 12 Bar Blues by playing chords and a walking bass.  Year 5 have been learning to play the melody and bass line for the song ‘Wimoweh’.   Pupils have also used the Garageband app. to play and record their performance work.

Spooky Compositions!

Pupils in year 3 and 4 developed their composing skills by creating music inspired by a picture of a haunted house. Using keyboards, xylophones, guiros, wood blocks and tambourines they explored and combined sounds to create simple but affective composition!

Whole Class Violin!

The children in both Year 3 classes have been learning to play the violin this half term. All pupils can now confidently hold the violin and play the notes GDAE – Greedy Dogs Always Eat!  Pupils pluck the strings with confidence but also took on the challenge of learning how to play using a bow.  Well done year 3!

Theory Club Challenge

Seven pupils from year 6 have formed a Theory Club who met weekly to develop their understanding of music notation.

During this half term they have developed their understanding of treble and bass clef notes, basic note values, time signatures and rests.  Their target is to reach the standard for ABRSM grade 1 theory before the end of the year!  Good luck!!!

Year 5 River Trip

Last week, Year 5 participated in the “My Tyne” project, led by the Tyne Rivers Trust. We learnt about how chemicals from farmers’ fields can contribute to pollution within our local rivers. To check a river’s pollution level, you can monitor the invertebrate species within the water; different species have different pollution tolerance levels. We really enjoyed learning and using the “kick sampling” method to collect different animals. Within our samples, we found several species and decided that the water samples were medium-low levels of pollution.

Following this activity, we had a discussion about the “Groundwork” project and how to support our local environment. We collected different leaf samples and looked at the shapes of different leaf species.

Overall, we had a fantastic (and not too wet) outdoor day of learning and are looking forward to having a follow-up session in the Spring term.

Mile Club Marathon Runner

A huge congratulations to our first Mile Club gold medalist of the year!

To get a certificate and gold medal in Mile Club, children must complete 26 miles (complete one mile over 26 weeks). This total is accumulated throughout year 5 and 6, showing how much perseverance children need to accomplish this achievement.

Well done!Tye Mile club

Nursery Chatterboxes

We had such a fantastic turn-out for the Chatterbox making sessions. The children brought a shoebox from home and helped by Mams, Dads, Nannas and Grandads they wrapped and decorated each box using their best creative skills and what brilliant results!  A full range of resources were used with the pom-poms and glitter being clear favourites.

Each child also brought up to 5 items to place in their specially decorated box. We look forward to the children having the opportunity to share their surprise items with their friends in the Nursery.

The Chatterboxes will give the children a whole range of potential key skills. They will be encouraged to talk and therefore help further develop speech, language and communication. They will share and take-turns as well as help develop good listening habits. Their chosen items make important links to their interests and previous experiences which will enable them to make connections in their thinking and language skills as well as important repetition of key basic speaking and listening skills… All that from a little shoebox; the learning possibilities in the Nursery are endless!
